About Hot Springs

Lake Hamilton

Lake Hamilton

Lake Hamilton is 18.5 miles long and covers 7200 acres. It offers lots of areas to fish, boat, waterski and swim with warm waters throughout the summer. It sits along the Quachita river in between lakes Ouachita and Catherine. Originally home to Al Capone in the 1950's the Hot Springs area has developed into one of the most popular vacation destinations in the south.

Lake Ouachita

Lake Ouachita

Lake Ouachita, the second cleanest lake in the United States, sits next to Lake Hamilton and offers numerous activities. The official site offers a lot of helpful information on the area.

DeGray Lake

DeGray Lake

DeGray Lake, about 20 miles south of the Lake Home, is a large (13,800 acres) lake popular for boating, fishing and water sports.

Hot Springs Fishing

Fishing

Lake Hamilton, Ouachita and Catherine all offer good year-round fishing. Lake Hamilton is home to the Lake Hamilton Fishery which breeds 3 million fingerlings annually. The range of fish includes scrappy redear, green and longear sunfish; black, spotted, white and smallmouth basses; black and white crappie; flathead, blue, channel, and bullhead catfish; walleye and chain pickerel. Rainbow trout are also stocked in both Lake Hamilton and Catherine. Bass fishing in Hamilton and Ouachita is popular in the summer, while forage fish and bass is popular in the winter on Lake Catherine.

Oaklawn Racing Track

Horseracing

The Oaklawn Jockey Club race season runs from mid-January through mid-April each year. The Lake Home is located conveniently down Central Ave. for easy access to the races.

Garvan Gardens

Botanical Gardens

The Garvan Woodland Gardens are situated on Lake Hamilton and manicured by the University of Arkansas. The Holiday Lights (don't miss!) run from around Thanksgiving until the end of the year but you can't go wrong whenever you visit as the gardens are magnificent.

Hot Springs Water Park

Amusement and Water Park

About a 15 minute drive from our house on Lake Hamilton, Magic Springs and Crystal Falls has plenty of fun activities for the kids. The water park is top of the line and covers the whole range from toddlers to teens. And the amusement rides are not for the feint of heart. It's a lot of fun!

Hot Springs Shopping

Shopping

The historic township of Hot Springs offers all kinds of boutique stores along with an array of antique stores. A rundown of many of these stores can be found on the official Hot Springs site.

Hot Springs Restaurants

Dining

There are numerous restaurants on Lake Hamilton that can be accessed by boat or by car. There are also plenty of restaurants along Central Ave (close by) and up the road in the city of Hot Springs. Here's a local resource you can use.

Restaurant Recommendations

We've tried a bunch of different restaurants in the area and recommend the following (keep in mind we shoot for good food in a casual environment):

Coffee

Coffee Love has great espressos and is just around the corner. Try a Mexican Mocha - you won't be disappointed.

Breakfast

The English Muffin is a local diner just around the corner from our place that serves great breakfasts.

Pizza

Sam's Pizza sits right on Lake Hamilton near our lake house and is a cozy pub with great pizzas (and a nice view if you step/eat outside).

Mexican

We have two places we like - La Hacienda serves very good traditional Mexican just up Central Ave. and Taco Mama serves great food with a fun atmosphere.

Italian

Luna Bella is an upscale Italian place (that serves only dinner) five minutes from our home. Very good hand-made Italian food but can get busy - reservations recommended.

Latin

Rolando's, located in downtown Hot Springs, serves great fare and has a fun atmosphere for lunch or dinner.

Waterfront

The Fisherman's Wharf, has a convenient location right on the water. They serve steaks, seafood and drinks (and you can feed the fish and turtles right off the deck). It's a little pricey for the quality but the setting is hard to beat.

Hot Springs Events

Events

Both the official Hot Springs site and Arkansas.com list all of the latest events in the area. We highly recommend the Holiday Lights (from Thanksgiving through the end of the year) at Garvan Gardens.
